According to a new study, carried out by researchers at Hofstra University and a non-profit support group, private support groups have worked with 11,268 unique survivors of trafficking since 2000 and at least 1,606 people over this past year.
These numbers significantly exceed official estimates. A 2007-08 study by the New York State Interagency Task Force on Human Trafficking reported just 36 confirmed victims in the entire state of New York.
